There are several parables in our society wherein the underlying theme is to “never judge a book by its cover”. Netphiles thinks these are great words to live by, as it engenders open-mindedness and cuts through our proclivity to judge things on appearance alone. This is a fine, high-minded philosophy that I whole-heartedly encourage people to aspire to, but when it comes to practical application from a consumerist perspective, no amount of good will is going to change people’s behavior. Folks just don’t have the time!

I’m not saying that consumers are bad people; it’s just that they are so darn busy. They have needs, and a small amount of time to meet them in the course of their day. So, when they dive into the ocean of commercial solutions for those needs and are deluged by a flood of choices, they have to make a decision. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have time to do detailed analysis on where to buy a coffee and bagel between home and work. It’s sad, but for the uninitiated, your scrappy little business isn’t going to be judged on the quality of its products; it’s going to be judged on what it is wearing and how pretty its face is. Shallow, I know, but hey - we all have to shave and iron our shirts before we go to work, right?
